2011 Tennis on Campus State Championships

Eight teams coming from the College of Charleston, Clemson and USC converged at the Charleston Tennis Center this past weekend for the 7th annual Tennis on Campus State Championship. This team format tournament showcased great talent and exceptional camaraderie and sportsmanship throughout the weekend. The Charleston Tennis Center and their staff, Peggy Bohne, Denise McCracken and Delores Jackson provided outstanding support and service to the players.
After three rounds of pool play on Saturday the Championship bracket was set with Clemson’s A & B teams, the College of Charleston A team along with the USC A team. Having won the last three consecutive state championships and four out of six state championships the College of Charleston was a favorite.
USC advanced over the Clemson B team winning all 5 lines in a convincing 30-8 win that was truly a team victory. On the other side of the draw Clemson A squeaked a win in women’s doubles from Allie Wasilko and Melissa Boslet coming out on top 6-5 over the Cunagin sisters, Caitlin and Chloe. However, the College of Charleston won all four of the remaining lines to advance to the championships with a 29-14 win.
The College of Charleston’s Caitlin and Chloe Cunagin rebounded to play without any doubt in the women’s doubles set to go out ahead 6-3. USC quickly took control back winning the remaining 4 lines to clinch their first state championship with a 27-18 victory. Throughout the tournament USC showed depth on its roster with consistent performances from the doubles specialists Zach Junis and Lane Hinson with Jordan Hunter and Elizabeth Holland steadfastly securing their singles matches.
As our USTA SC state champion, USC will receive a travel stipend to attend the USTA Southern Championship in Auburn in the early spring of 2012 where they will seek a bid to Nationals in April of 2012.
