Smiling Seniors from Charleston bound for USTA National Championship

September 28, 2015 11:35 AM

Jane Fluet and her Mount Pleasant team, the Smiling Seniors, lived up to their fun name recently at the USTA League Adult 55 & Over Southern Sectional Championships in Asheville, North Carolina.

The team was all grins when they won a sectional championship at the 4.0 level and earned the chance to play at the USTA League 55 & Over National Championships from Oct. 23-25 in Surprise, Arizona.

Before they took off for Surprise, Fluet answered questions about the team, how they've been successful and the most interesting thing about her group.

How long has your team been playing together?

I became captain in 2006. Claudia Clissold had been the previous captain. She was an original team member but due to rotator cuff surgery has not played this past year. Alice Wright and Rebecca Williamson joined in 2008. In 2009 Charlotte Gerber became of age!

The year 2010 was the real beginning of this team. Julie Raney, Emily Thomas, Vicki Zimpfer and Betty Randolph all became members. Finally in 2014 Ruth Ennis aged up and Meridy Kennington joined us. We have been a very close group because many of us play together on a USTA 18 and a USTA 40 team.

Where do y'all play your home matches?

We play out of Mount Pleasant Recreation on Whipple Road in Mt. Pleasant.

How have y'all been so successful?

We all have a love of the game and enjoy competing. Everyone is supportive of each other and even though we are in our fifties we are still “working” on our games!

What are your expectations going into a USTA National Championship?

To do the best we can, enjoy the challenge and keep up our positive team rituals!

What's the most interesting thing about your team?

We have four lefties on this team!

Favorite part about USTA League?

Gives us an opportunity to compete.
