USA School Tennis is a program encouraging the introduction of our great sport to large numbers of children in a “captive audience” environment – the public and private, primary and secondary schools across the country.  It consists of 4 main components:

  1. Teacher training (workshops and curriculum guides) racquets and balls to those schools that agree to teach a tennis unit after the teacher training.
  2. A demonstration of the fun of tennis at a school assembly
  3. The linking of school tennis curriculum activities with after school USA Team Tennis programs with announcements, posters, flyers, and registration forms.

Teacher Training

USA School Tennis is a program in which Physical Education teachers attend a 4-6 hour in-service training to learn how to teach a tennis unit in their P.E. classes. USA School Tennis features a high participation and high success rate for the students.

Each P.E. teacher that attends the in service will receive a curriculum guide. These guides have been written by professional educators in collaboration with USPTA/PTR teaching professionals.  The curriculum guide provides lesson plans for the instructor to follow, broken down by grade level.

Tennis Equipment

Teachers that agree to teach a tennis unit will receive racquets to use in their classes. The racquets are given on a “permanent loan” basis to the school. Also, each school should understand that these racquets may be used by the local community Tennis Association for USTA programs.  These rackets are specifically designed, and made, for USA School Tennis by Wilson Racquet Sports.  Wilson has been a joint sponsor of USA School Tennis since the program began in 1985.  Teachers should contact Alicia at the SCTA office, (800) 644-7282, to notify her of their P.E. tennis unit dates.

We prefer that each school participating in this program become an organizational member of the USTA. The cost is $25/year and makes the school eligible to apply for grants through the USTA and receive 2 tennis magazines per month. If each school cannot join, our minimum recommendation is that the school district become an organizational member.

School Assemblies

The perfect way to initiate your tennis program is to host a school assembly for a grade or the entire student body. USTA staff transforms your gym or playground into a tennis court and conducts an entertaining tennis exhibition of 45-60 minutes with prizes for selected students, and a guest appearance by a local tennis pro. Students will see tennis as a cool sport that everyone can enjoy.

Short Court Matching Program

The USTA and Wilson Racquet Sports donate a short court for each one purchased by a school, thereby transforming gyms and playgrounds into functional tennis facilities, on a first come first serve basis.

After School and Summer Programming

The USTA works closely with community tennis association to support after school and summer tennis program. This gives students the opportunity to pursue the interest in tennis that was sparked by the USA School Tennis program.
