City of Florence Facility Wins Award

Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center

The City of Florence is a winner of the 2011 Outdoor Tennis Facility Award, presented by the American Sports Builders Association.  Talbot Tennis was recognized for its court construction work on the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.

In 2012, the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center will host the USTA South Carolina Jr. Team Tennis State Championships and the USTA South Carolina Mixed Doubles State Championships.

Brian Parkkonen, Director of Tennis at the facility, says the award offers confirmation that the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center has the potential to host many more major events.

"Receiving this award just confirms what everyone who has been out to the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center sees and feels on a daily basis. This is a first class facility that has the potential to host and run some of the biggest events and programs in the tennis community," Parkkonen said.  "Our goals over the next year will be to secure three key events: a national event, an ITF event, and a professional event. Hosting these events will showcase the true capacity and functionality of the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center."

The Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center opened on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 and is located at 1060 N. Cashua Drive.  The Tennis Center features 24 asphalt courts, 6 Har-Tru clay courts, a 5000 SF Tennis Activity Center with outdoor decking.  The activity center also includes a lounge area, student study area with computers, restrooms, locker rooms, meeting and office space and a pro shop.  The Florence Tennis Center hosts league play, open/free play, special instruction and developmental tennis clinics.
The American Sports Builders Association (ASBA), the national organization for builders and suppliers of materials for tennis courts, running tracks, fields and indoor sports flooring annually recognizes tennis, track, field, and indoor facilities which exemplify construction excellence.  A panel of ASBA members judges entries on elements such as layout and design, site work, drainage, base construction, surface, amenities, innovation, and overall impression.
