Gamecocks, Tigers, Chanticleers to Compete for USTA Championship

November 13, 2014 10:59 AM

Nine college club teams from across the state will compete for the USTA South Carolina Tennis On Campus State Championship this weekend on Pawleys Island.

Teams from the University of South Carolina, Clemson, Coastal Carolina, Furman and the College of Charleston will play at the championship, which will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Waccamaw Regional Tennis Center at Stables Park, 302 Gilman Road.

Every school except Coastal Carolina will field more than one team. But Coastal Carolina will be playing on familiar courts.

David Cummings, a junior at Coastal Carolina and the tennis club’s president, said all of the team has played at the Waccamaw center. “It’s one of the best facilities in the area,” he said.

About 60 players are expected to participate in the championships. Play begins at 9 a.m., Saturday, and is expected to finish by 1 p.m., Sunday. The matches are free to watch.
