In South Carolina, when the hour strikes one in the afternoon, most of us do not want to be outside playing tennis due to a sweltering sun and high humidity. But on Sunday, despite the hot weather, a small group of dedicated children ages 7 to 10 participated in USTA South Carolina’s 10 and under Early Development Camp. The kids participated to improve and develop their skills in a fast-paced environment while also having fun with other kids. The themes of this camp were rallying and respect.

The Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center hosted the camp, which featured 14 players. Oliver Stephens, USTA Lead Faculty Coach, and Tom Ruth, EDC Head Coach, led the camp. The coaching staff also included Sophie Woorons at the Brookstone Meadows Tennis Club, Reggie Sanderson of Van Der Meer Tennis and Kevin Jackson at the Camden Country Club.

The camp started with a player and parent welcome and registration. Shortly thereafter, the coaches took the participants onto the courts and helped them to get loose and improve their overall body coordination without having a tennis racket in their hand. Following was a more technical approach by the coaches, instructing the participants how to properly grip a racket and how to control one’s steps when trying to catch up with the ball and hit it back.

Later, Stephens discussed with the parents on how to work with children to further develop their skills and encourage the idea of playing other sports, even if it means just going out into the backyard and kicking a soccer ball around.

After a snack break, the participants were divided into teams to play each other in the Davis Cup/Fed Cup doubles around 3:30, followed by the Davis Cup/Fed Cup singles at 4. The camp wrapped up around 4:45 when the participants took a group photo and the players who exhibited great sportsmanship were given additional prizes and will also receive a certificate for their outstanding efforts.

More 10U Early Development Camps will be held later this year. If your player is interested in participating in the future, please contact Alexandria Howard at
