10U High Performance Training Camp

Tennisclub of the Lowcountry at Rose Hill
Thirty-five players ages 6-10 participated in the USTA SC High Performance 10 U Camps held March 10-11, 2012 in Bluffton and Cayce, respectively.  Saturday’s training was held at the beautiful Tennisclub of the Lowcountry at Rose Hill in Bluffton with the host facility providing two of its’ top pros in camp co-director Butch Staples and pro Jo Cahi.  Brian Parkkonen, SC Player Development Chair and Director of the Florence Tennis Center served as the other co-director, while Tom Ruth, Assistant Pro at Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, and JoAnn Lee, 10 U Director for Family Circle Tennis Center were also on court for the duration of the days’ events.

The new, state of the art Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center played host to Sunday’s camp, which boasted 17 total players, and coaches Staples, Parkkonen, and Ruth were joined by Tedi Doncheva, Head Pro at Rock Hill Tennis Center, and Hunter Strasburger, Director of Tennis at Spring Valley Country Club in Columbia.

Both camps featured drills, strategies, and fundamentals unique to the 10 and Under Tennis featuring the QuickStart format, developed by USTA Player Development and is being implement at Early Development Centers throughout the country.  These competencies will make for an easier transition for the players as they progress and age up to a full-size court using the yellow ball.  The morning session consisted of a dynamic warmup, partnered hitting rallies using various spins, which lead to coach-directed hand-feeding drills and live ball drills with situational points.  Lunch was provided for players and parents, and parents were treated to an information session, including Q&A, by coaches Parkkonen and Staples.  The focus of the parent meeting was the Parent Tennis Passport, which is a guide to help parents and players navigate the youth tennis pathway.  The players returned to the courts for another dynamic warm-up, and a few additional drills before being split into teams and competing in coached match play.

Another series of these 10 U Camps is being planned for the fall, with dates TBD.  If your player is interested in participating in one of these advanced 10 U camps in the future, please contact Jessica Amick at amick@sctennis.com for more information.
