Local High Performance 10 and Under Camp held at Family Circle Tennis Center

Top local 10 and Under players gathered at Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island for a High Performance Camp hosted by the USTA South Carolina Player Development Committee. The camp was led by head coach Butch Staples, tennis pro of Bluffton, South Carolina. Staples is very involved with 10 and Under tennis and brought with him an seasoned team of local tennis coaches to assist him in running the camp. The purpose of the Local High Performance 10 and Under camp was to allow the players to have opportunities to play with each other and also evaluate the individual players on their strokes.

The High Performance Camp consisted of 36 local players and six coaches. The coaches were Butch Staples, Tom Ruth, Jo Cahi, Tim Smith, Jo Ann Lee, and Toni Young. These coaches provided positive attitudes and high energy through out the whole day to keep the players motivated and excited. The camp started at 10 AM with warm-up games & fun stretching activities to get the kids ready for a long day of competitive tennis.

The morning focused on athletic skill testing and skill development. Each group had a separate court that coaches were able to evaluate the players individually. One court consisted of filming each player hitting a forehand, backhand, and serves which will allow the player to see their strokes next to professional tennis players, and ultimately, how they can improve their strokes. Some of the other stations counted serving percentages and a medicine ball toss.

The second half of the day included cooperative live ball drills, such as cross court rallying, and competitive live play. The juniors played singles, doubles, and mixed doubles matches. This was a great way for the players to prepare for the upcoming Chick-fil-a Palmetto Championships, held in Belton, South Carolina.

Overall the High Performance Local Camp was a success and allowed players to practice their sport with other top juniors under the purview of the most experienced 10 and Under Coaches in the area.
