About 130 kids are expected to participate in a fun day of tennis in Aiken on Saturday.

The U.S. Tennis Association Play Day, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Odell Weeks Tennis Center, will feature fun games that will help children learn the basic skills of tennis. Participating kids also will get free pizza and fun prizes, including USTA hats, T-shirts and bags. Kids who were registered by February 26 also will receive a free Aiken tennis T-shirt.

“It’s going to be the event of the season for Aiken tennis,” said Jack Mills, chairman of the Aiken Area Community Tennis Association.

The youth tennis event is also one of thousands that will be taking place throughout the month of March as part of the celebration of World Tennis Day on March 10. These events, part of the USTA’s commitment to improve the health and wellness of children by getting them active through tennis, serve as an opportunity to encourage families and children of all ages and skill levels to try the sport at local tennis facilities. A complete listing of events can be found on youthtennis.com.

The Aiken organization is hosting the local USTA Play Day, along with the City of Aiken Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department. Both organizations want to get more kids playing tennis, said Mills, who has been involved with the USTA for 39 years. He has previously served as the vice president of the USTA and is currently a presidential appointee to the USTA Board of Directors.

“We just want to promote and develop the growth of tennis,” Mills said.
