COLUMBIA, S.C.  Eleven teams from South Carolina will compete at the USTA Southern Junior Team Tennis Section Championships this weekend in Lexington County.

Altogether, more than 500 players from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee will compete at the championships, which will host play in four age divisions: 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under and 18 and under.

The champions in the 14 and under and 18 and under levels will have the opportunity to advance to the USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championships, which will take place in Lexington County in October.

Eric Wammock's 18 and under Hilton Head Island team and Eric Jackson's 18 and under Lexington team both will be looking to return to the USTA National Championships this weekend.

Jackson's team is comprised of high school tennis players from across the state. "A lot of the players are from rival high schools and play each other in tournaments often. But having them on the same team, nobody could tell these kids are usually 'enemies,'" Jackson told USTA Southern. "They're great kids who really get along well together. Such a fun group to coach."

The Southern event starts Friday evening and will be hosted at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center, 1120 Fort Congaree Trail, and the Lexington County Tennis Complex, 425 Oak Drive.

This weekend’s championships are free to attend. Matches conclude Sunday.
