JTT State Championships Underway in Florence

FLORENCE, S.C. – The biggest USTA South Carolina Junior Team Tennis State Championships in years got underway Friday evening with sunny weather and clear skies.

Teams in three divisions – 10 and under, 12 and under and 18 and under – began play at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center. Coaches, parents and players were all eager for their championship runs to begin.

“We’re excited for all the players and coaches and want everyone to have a fun time playing this lifelong sport,” said Rashawn Nelson, junior programs manager at USTA South Carolina, the state office of the U.S. Tennis Association.

About 250 players and 32 teams from across the state are expected at this year’s championships, which will have an estimated economic impact of nearly $207,000 on the City of Florence, said Darlene Buchanan, the city’s recreation manager. This is the fourth consecutive year the JTT State Championships have been held in Florence.

On Saturday, play begins in the 14 and under division and continues in the 10 and under, 12 and under and 18 and under divisions. The first matches are scheduled for 9 a.m. Admission is free.

9 a.m. – noon: Play continues.

Noon – 2 p.m.: Tennis Extravaganza: Players and coaches take a break from tennis and enjoy a water slide, slip and slide and video game truck.

2 p.m. – 6 p.m.: Play continues.


9 a.m. – 6 p.m.: Championships conclude.
