SC teams travel to JTT State Championships

Columbia, July 18, 2012 – More than 150 junior tennis players will head to Florence, SC July 20th for the Jr. Team Tennis State Championships.
Sanctioned by USTA South Carolina, the three-day event will be held at the new Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.
Winners from their local leagues were invited to play in the State Championships. The tournament consists of five divisions, the youngest playing in the 10s divisions and the oldest playing in the 18s divisions.
To add more fun to the competition, the tournament awards one team the Team Spirit Award.
"Adding this award to our State Championships has changed the whole feel of the tournament," said Michelle Campanella, the tournament director. "It builds an air of fun and excitement, while giving teams one more chance to go home a winner."
Creating posters, wearing matching uniforms, decorating cars and making-up cheers and dances are just a few ways teams can show their team spirit and earn points during the tournament. The team with the most points at the conclusion of Saturday's Tennis Extravaganza is awarded the prestigious Team Spirit Award.
Along with the Team Spirit Award, a sportsmanship award is given to one boy and one girl that exhibit exceptional sportsmanship throughout the tournament. This award is voted on by opposing team coaches and announced after the tournament. The male and female winners will be presented with their trophy by their local league coordinator.
This is the first year the tournament has been held at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center. The Florence Tennis Center has 24 hard courts, 6 clay courts, and a large pavilion to watch all the matches, making this the perfect place to host the Championships.
Playing in a round robin format, matches begin Friday night and conclude Sunday. Winners from the 10s-18s divisions will advance to the Southern Championships in Auburn, Alabama. Local Jr. Team Tennis teams will be participating from Beaufort County, Columbia, Florence, Greenville, Irmo, Lexington, and Spartanburg.
