Southern Closed Recap

The Southern Closed Championships, the sectional step to qualify for Nationals, recently finished up all over the South. South Carolina sent more than 150 players to compete in the championships along with five coaches. Read the below recaps for more on each age division.

Southern Closed BG 10

The Boys’ and Girls’ 10 Southern Closed Championships were held at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, South Carolina. Throughout the weekend, South Carolina’s players were coached by Tom Ruth. Brooke Wrigley from Bluffton won the west singles bracket of the compass draw.  Also, Lily Zimmermann from Aiken won the south singles bracket.  Many of South Carolina’s doubles teams played in the finals of their respective brackets of the compass draw.

Southern Closed BG 12

Cary, North Carolina, hosted the Boys’ and Girls’ 12 Southern Closed. Led by coach Chris Waters, many players traveled from South Carolina to compete in the tournament. Robin Alston was on the winning doubles team of the tournament. Ashe Ray, Robin Alston, and Sara McClure played in the quarterfinals of the main draw. Other noteworthy competitors were Mcalindon Jahn, who won the north singles bracket, and Samantha Johns, who won the northeast bracket.  

Southern Closed BG 14

The Boys’ and Girls’ 14 Southern Closed Championships were held this past week in Macon, Georgia. Coached by Cornelius Jordan, top players from South Carolina traveled to compete in the tournament. Elise Mills and Maggie Cubitt won the girls doubles. Thomas Jahn finished third in the boys’ main draw. Sam Kavarana competed in the consolation final. Maggie Cubitt and Elizabeth Truluck competed in the quarterfinals of the main draw and the consolation final.  Elizabeth Truluck was also awarded the Sportsmanship Award.

Southern Closed BG 16

Little Rock, Arkansas, was the host site of Boys’ and Girls’ 16 Southern Closed Championships. The Boys’ and Girls’ 16 were coached by Carlos Lozano. Makenna Jones won the girls singles title! She also partnered with Cameron Kriscunus to capture the doubles title. Oliver Crawford finished in fourth place, and Sean Sculley competed in the quarterfinals and the consolation final.

Southern Closed 18

Top Boys’ and Girls’ 18 South Carolina players traveled to Mobile, Alabama, to compete in the Girls’ and Boys’ 18 Southern Closed Championship. The sister duo, Carolina and Jade Lewis, competed in the doubles final. South Carolina’s players were coached by Mark Smith. Matthew Mendez and Jade Lewis competed in the quarterfinals in singles. Hayes Sherman and Patrick Tobacco were commended for their sportsmanship and were awarded sportsmanship pins.
