As one of the top tennis coaches in the state, he was recognized in 2010 when he was named the USTA South Carolina John Newcomb Pro of the Year. Carl not only coaches juniors, but also travels with them to tournaments around the country.

His coaching doesn’t end there. He coaches Southern Junior Cup and Boys and Girls 12s Zonals, which is a national team competition where juniors in the 12s, 14s and 16s from the Southern Section will compete against teams from other sections around the country. He has also worked as a coach at USTA regional training centers and competition training centers in South Carolina.

Aside from coaching, Carl has been part of several USTA South Carolina committees since 2009, including the junior competition and player development committees. He also served on the USTA South Carolina board of directors from 2011-2013.

Born and raised in Spartanburg, Hocker has been around tennis his whole life. He played at the junior level in South Carolina and went on to play college tennis at The Citadel and USC Upstate.
