May 27, 2005 10:31 PM

From applications (with essays) submitted in May to Carol O'Shea at the USTA South Carolina office, the following young players were selected to attend these great SC tennis camps on scholarships provided by their Directors and Varsity Coaches.

Rod Ray Tennis Camp, Wofford University – Hunter Hamer, age 14, Dillon, SC

Some of what he wrote on: How can tennis as a sport help you be a better student?
“Tennis as a sport helps me accept losing and winning and how to meet a tough change.  I know that if I do my best during a tennis game I can be proud of myself and confident to face tough times in school... Tennis as a sport helps me learn about other people’s cultures and make new friends... It helps me to be more respectful and helpful to my teachers.”

Total Tennis Training Camp, Clemson University – Alli Burchett, age 6, Landrum, SC

Excerpt of what she wrote on: What would you do to get more kids your age playing tennis?
“I would tell other kids how fun it is and ask them to play with me... I could make a poster and take it to school to let everyone know about tennis.”

FMU Camp, Francis Marion University – Ellen Scott, age 10, Florence, SC

A separate tennis scholarship to Francis Marion University has been awarded to Ellen Scott.  Ellen is an excellent student and is excited about playing tennis at the FMU camp this summer.
