60 Teams Boil Down to 4 Champions at SC 3.0, 3.5 Adult Districts

June 10, 2005 02:43 PM
Sixty 3.0 and 3.5 Adult teams invaded host site Snee Farm Country Club and Whipple Recreation Center and Creekside Swim and Racquet Club in Mount Pleasant June 4-6, wrapping up the USA League South Carolina District Championships for 2005.

This championship attracted 700 players and came down to two men's and two women's teams that will represent South Carolina next month at the Southern Section Championships--"the world's largest tennis tournament"--on Daniel Island. Adult 2.5, 4.0-5.5 and all Senior state champions had been decided on previous weekends.

Snee Farm's Christy Cherry hosted a Welcome Reception on the club lawn Friday evening. Play began Saturday morning and continued through Sunday evening in a round robin format within rating groups. Group winners met in semifinals and finals Monday.

SC State League Coordinator Mary Goins credited Cherry, her staff and "the army of South Carolina staff members for working so hard and diligent during the rain delays and the hot and humid weather for the completion of the championships."

Championship finals:
3.0 M -- LATA/The Stringers, Lexington (Larry Guster, captain) 3, CTL II/Too Wilde, Columbia (Gregory Wych, captain) 2
3.0 W -- UPTA #1/Thornblade Swingers, Greer (Marcia Parrott, captain) 3, LATA II/Coldstream Anglers, Columbia (Melissa Walker, captain) 2
