2005 Wachovia Palmetto Championships-Belton, S. C.

     The Wachovia Palmetto Championships, South Carolina’s junior qualifying tournament, was played in Belton for the 49th consecutive year June 3-10.  This year’s tournament featured 482 entries, and included almost all of the top players from through out the state. 

     Championships were determined for both boys and girls in five age divisions.  Matches were played in Belton and Anderson.  Jim Russell and Stephanie Hammond were tournament referees.  Mary Burgess was the 10s and Challenger Referee and Maxine LeCroy the 12s referee.  Mark Smith and Rex Maynard were the tournament directors.  Carey Washington headed a group of 34 certified USTA officials to oversee play at all court locations.

     Five players added to previous Palmetto singles championships.  Stephen Behr of Florence won the Boys’ 12s for the second straight year.  He also won the Boy’s 10s in 2003.  Shelby Rogers of Mt. Pleasant won the Girls’ 14s after winning the Girls’ 10s in 2002 and Girls’ 14s in 2004.  Mallory Cecil captured her second straight title, winning the Girls’ 16s after capturing the 14s last year.  Cecil had a match point against her before coming back to win the second and third sets.

     Chris Britt of Columbia won the Boys’ 16s; he won the Boys’ 14s in 2003.  Laurianne Henry of Anderson won her third straight Palmetto title, and fourth overall.  She was the 12s champion in 2001, 14s champion in 2003, 16s champion in 2004 and 18s champion this year.  Will Guzick of Greer won the Boys’ 18s for his fourth title, having previously won the 12s (2001), 14s (2002) and 16s (2004).

     Hoy, Behr, Browning, Guzick, Cecil and Henry were all #1 seeds.  Britt, Chumney and Cameron were #2 seeds.  Rogers was a #5 seed.  Behr, Cecil and Guzick were the only older singles champions to also win a doubles title this year.  Behr won the Boys’ 12s doubles with partner Rob Galloway of Greenville, Cecil teamed with Caroline Thornton of Sullivans Island to win the Girls’ 16s and Guzick teamed with Basile to win the Boys’ 18s.  Morgan Chumney of Lake Wylie also won two titles, capturing the Girls’ 10s singles and doubles (with partner Katherine Lee of Easley).

Girls’ 16s:  Mallory Cecil (Spartanburg) def. Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island) 2-6, 7-5, 6-2
Boys’ 16s:  Christopher Britt (Columbia) def. Ross Moyer (Florence) 6-1, 6-3
Girls’ 18s:  Laurianne Henry (Anderson) def. Virginia Berry (Spartanburg) 6-0, 6-2

Basile was playing in his eighth straight Palmetto doubles championship match.

Boys’ 16s:  Ashkon Babaee (Columbia) def. Richard Bunch (Columbia) 6-0, 5-7, 10-6

     Several special awards were presented during the tournament.  Jason Basile of Charleston was selected to receive the $1,500 Dunlop Scholarship, presented each year at the 18’s party to an incoming college freshman based on academic, extra curricular and tennis achievements. 

     Tournament Director Rex Maynard was presented with a watch commemorating his 30 years of volunteer service to the Palmetto.  Several sportsmanship awards were presented.  The Kimberly Hampton Memorial Sportsmanship Award (Girls’ 12s) went to Mary Chris Satterthwaite of Columbia.  The Matthew Strange Memorial Sportsmanship Award (Boys’ 12s) went to Rob Galloway of Greenville.  The Malloy Evans Memorial Sportsmanship Award, which goes to a player in the older age divisions, went to Basile.
