Anderson's Henry Adds to National Intersectional 16s Championship

July 29, 2005 02:24 PM

Laurianne Henry of Anderson SC helped lead Team Southern to the 2005 National 16s Intersectional Championships in Shreveport LA. The third-seeded Southern team upset #1 seed Southern California 5-4 in the semi-finals, before crushing Team Florida with an 8-1 victory in the championship.

Teams representing each section of the USTA were present and competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Team Southern also posted wins over Intermountain, Southwest and Mid Atlantic. Members of the championship team, in addition to Henry, were: Anamika Bhargava of Memphis TN, Joanna Mather of Duluth GA, Mallory Burdette of Jackson GA, Houston Barrick of Brentwood TN, Ryan Smith of Marietta GA, Jarmere Jenkins of College Park GA, Rhyne Williams of Knoxville TN.

Southern Coach Rick Davison of Peachtree City GA said, after the championship win: "I am so proud of this great group of players because there is no question that they won by working hard all week and were prepared for doubles, which usually determines which team wins. "It was especially nice to win this event since it was in our own section.  It is definitely impressive to have such a young group of players win an event of this magnitude and it shows how strong the level of play will be in the Southern Section in the future."
