5 SC Teams Win Southern Section Championships; Nationals Next

August 1, 2005 03:54 PM
Three teams from Hilton Head Island, one from Myrtle Beach and one from Low Country won championships at the USA League Southern Sectionals that ended Sunday at Family Circle Tennis Center, Daniel Island. Eight other SC teams placed second.
More than 2,000 players competed in the nine-state sectionals that were played in two four-day segments. The "World's Largest Tennis Tournament" will return to Daniel Island next year.
No other state came close to the number of teams South Carolina had in the finals -- 13. Georgia and North Carolina matched SC with five team champions, but had only two and one finalists, respectively. Louisiana had three champions and four finalists.
Not only did SC players do well on court. Monty Shealy of Mt. Pleasant won the SC Tennis Patrons Foundation fund-raising raffle--a trip for two to the U.S. Open Labor Day weekend that includes box seats, airfare and hotel accommodations. Shealy missed the drawing at Friday night at the second Sectionals Player Party at the Harbour Hilton Hotel at Patriots Point but won nonetheless.
All the SC teams that won Sectionals, plus a bonus, now advance to Nationals except the Senior 2.5s. Adult 2.5s are set up for Nationals, but not Seniors.
Southern combined its Adult Men's 5.5 and Open competition. With SC teams placing #1 and #2 in the round robin, the 5.5 champion (Low Country Ballers) will compete in the National Open Division, while the second place team (I'On Club Beach Pros) will advance to National 5.5s.
