August 23, 2005 03:54 PM

The Florence Tennis Association hosted the 1st annual Girls High School Tournament  Aug. 19-21. Eight high school teams participated in the three-day event, with South Florence High School as the host school and Dutch Fork winning the championship.

The teams played a round robin format in two divisions, with one match Friday evening and a morning and afternoon match Saturday. On Sunday morning, the winners from each bracket played for the title while the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place teams from each division played each other.

Brookland-Cayce and Dutch Fork played for the title on Sunday with Dutch Fork coming out on top 6-0. The teams, coaches, and parents were treated to dinner on Saturday evening and a pizza lunch after the completion of play on Sunday. The teams finished as follows:

1 - Dutch Fork High School (4-0)
2 - Brooklyn Cayce High School (3-1)
3 - West Florence High School (3-1)
4 - South Florence High School (2-2)
5 - Hartsville High School – A (2-2)
6 - Darlington High School (1-3)
7 - North Augusta High School (1-3)
8 - Hartsville High School – B (0-4)

The purpose of the tournament was to provide teams with a pre-season event, giving them each four matches over the three-day period to help fine tune their squads prior to the start of the season.

The FTA is already looking forward to the 2nd Annual Boys and Girls Tournaments with plans to expand to 12 teams for the next events.
