Demonstration to Kick Off the 2005 South Carolina Combo Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. (October 19, 2005)  – Recently unveiled at the US Open, Cardio Tennis is a fitness initiative developed by the Tennis Industry Association with the support of the United States Tennis Association.  This nationwide program is aimed at combining tennis with a high-energy cardio-vascular workout.  The Cardio Tennis Demonstration will serve as an opening event for this year’s South Carolina Combo State Championships.  The demonstration is set for Friday, October 28th from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. at the Family Circle Tennis Center.   The event is free and open to the public.

Set in a fun group setting, Cardio Tennis is not only a great new fitness routine designed to help people get in shape, but is also an excellent way to introduce the non-playing public to the sport no matter what their tennis ability.  The program, taught by certified tennis professionals, features a circuit of drills giving participants a dynamic and challenging workout.  A typical Cardio Tennis workout includes a 5-10 minute warm-up, 30-50 minute cardio workout and a 5-10 minute cool down.  Each phase is specifically intended to be fun, challenging and get your heart rate pumping.  Cardio Tennis is currently available at over 700 public and private tennis facilities across the country.

“Cardio tennis is exciting,” stated Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive of Community Tennis for the USTA.  “It’s a great way for new and existing players to get a fantastic tennis workout.  This program will appeal to both new and existing players and is a great complement to our Tennis Welcome Center efforts.”

Sophie Woorons, a national Cardio Tennis program instructor, will direct the Cardio Tennis demonstration.  In addition to Ms. Woorons, Family Circle Tennis Center pros will also be on hand to offer instruction on the program as well.  No reservations are required for the event, which is free and open to the public.  For more information about Cardio Tennis, or to find your local facility, visit www.cardiotennis.com.
