Hilton Head Island Clubs Host USTA South Carolina Senior League State Championships May 12, 13, 14 and …

May 20, 2006 09:28 PM

A mighty contest took place on Hilton Head Island May 13-15 as Thor, god of lightning and thunder, did battle with the tennis gods. The tennis gods prevailed, as their faithful tennis-playing worshippers basked in southern sunshine on Saturday, dodged the raindrops on Sunday and endured Thor’s deluge on Monday.

Murraywood Sr 3.5 Team - 2006 USTA SC Senior League Championships

The weekend began on Friday with team registration, a captains’ meeting and a wonderful beach and poolside players’ reception at the Holiday Inn Oceanside, attended by nearly 500 players and guests. The host for the tournament, the Tennis Association of Hilton Head Island (TAHHI), did a fantastic job with all the arrangements and with providing enthusiastic and hard-working volunteers to support the USTA staff and the site staffs. Play took place at eight first-class facilities, with Sea Pines Racquet Club as the host and main site. Also participating were Sea Pines Country Club, Long Cove Club, South Beach Tennis Club, Golden Bear Tennis Club at Indigo Run, Moss Creek Tennis Center, Country Club of Hilton Head and South Carolina Yacht Club. Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center generously pitched in with needed courts on rainy Monday.

Volunteers and Staff at Sr Leag Chps - May 2006 on HHI

Some 902 players began play on Saturday in beautiful weather. Everything went well on Sunday, with only minor problems with rain. Thor tried his best to spoil everything on Monday, but

players, officials, volunteers and tennis sites combined to thwart him. All matches were completed save those of the 2.5 men and women played the next day (all Hilton Head teams), and two others arranged to be completed subsequently. As awards and T-shirts were being handed out in the gathering darkness and yet another downpour, the shrieks and cries of joy of the Hilton Head 4.0 women could still be heard reverberating around the stadium court from learning that they received a wildcard to the Sectional Championships. Results of Finals played to-date appear below.
