2006 Wachovia Palmetto Championships

June 19, 2006 02:27 PM

B16 Winner Wesley Moran - Wachovia Championships 2006

The 50th Wachovia Palmetto Championships ended Friday, June 9, with singles championships in five age divisions for boys and girls. The 2006 tournament featured 525 entries from throughout South Carolina.

Tournament Director Rex Maynard said the 50th was the best Palmetto Championships yet. “We were blessed with great weather throughout the week, with only one short rain delay in the matches the first Friday. All the players were great and played outstanding tennis, plus they showed excellent sportsmanship. Thanks to all the players, parents and coaches for participating in this year’s Palmetto, and thanks to the volunteers and staff for working so hard to put on a quality event. We really appreciate our sponsors; they allow us to do many extra things for the players. The Palmetto is a Belton tradition, and a South Carolina tennis tradition. We hope to see it continue here for 50 more years!”

Three sportsmanship awards were presented during the Awards Ceremony following the singles finals Friday. Isabel Dennis of Charleston received the Kimberly Hampton Memorial Sportsmanship Award for the Girls 12s and Alan Thomas received the Matthew Strange Memorial Sportsmanship Award for the Boys 12s.

G16 Winner Shelby Rogers - Wachovia Championships 2006

The tournament’s overall award, the Malloy Evans Memorial Sportsmanship Award, went to Ben Taylor of Lexington. The award goes to a player in the older age divisions and is based on their attitude and sportsmanship throughout their Palmetto career. Taylor played in his ninth Palmetto Championships and has been ranked in the top 10 in the state for the past eight years. The Dunlop Scholarship was also presented during the tournament, and went to Virginia Berry of Spartanburg, who will be a freshman at Davidson College this fall.
