South Carolina Team Shines in 2006 Southern Senior Cup

June 27, 2006 04:22 PM
Members of SR Cup Overall Winners Team 06

South Carolina came within four matches of dethroning defending champion Georgia in the Senior Cup competition in Columbus, GA, June 1-4. Final standings were GA with 63 match wins, NC with 61, and SC with 60. Remaining states in order of finish were TN, AL, KY, MS and LA. Arkansas did not send a team this year.

The women's team from SC turned in a stunning performance, winning the Women's Overall competition by two points over runner-up NC. SC's men came in third behind GA and NC.

For the 13th year, Cooper Creek Tennis Center was the site for what has become known as the "crown jewel" of Southern adult tennis. The level of competition among age groups from 35-75 is inspiring. Friendships and rivalries are renewed each year, and those players chosen to represent their states know that they are privileged to be part of such an outstanding event.

Columbia's Roberta Case is retiring as SC Women's Senior Cup Captain after 18 years of dedicated service in her role of recruiter, organizer, strategist, and cheerleader. The SC women were proud to come through with the championship trophy as a fitting tribute to Roberta's exceptional leadership over the years.

Players who went undefeated in the three-day competition were:

Sr Cup 75 Winners

Greg Beers (35 singles)

Jim Hinson and Al Cannon (45 doubles)

Ben Varn (65 singles)

Bill Harper and Jerry Hanchrow (75 doubles)

Julie Sawyer (35 singles)

Brenda Carter and Susie Peiffer (55 singles)

Ann Hunt and Cindy Babb (55 doubles)

Betsy McColl and Judy Levering (65 singles)

Marcia Constance and Gloria Henninger (75 singles).

SC's women won three divisions: 55, 65, and 75 to help wrap up the overall championship. The SC 35 women finished 5th, and the 45's took 4th place.

SC's men's team under Captain Tom Foster was in a strong position in the semi-finals on Sat. but lost points when #1 55 singles player, Bernie McGuire, went down with a knee injury and was unable to compete the rest of the weekend. Peter Pristach and Greg Beers deserve special mention for their fine play in the 35's against younger opponents. SC's men's divisions finished as follows:

35's------2nd place

45's------5th place

55's------4th place

65's------3rd place

75's------3rd place

As always, there were many individual highlights throughout the competition. ....Gloria Henninger in the 75's pulled out two dramatic three-set matches to help win her division.---Julie Sawyer overcame leg cramps in the third set in the quarterfinals of the 35's and went on to win over a tough TN opponent.---Joe Roberts came back from a first set loss and a 0-3 deficit in the third set to keep SC's 75 hopes alive for 3rd place. Bill Harper and Jerry Hanchrow then won a 3-set thriller to knock arch-rival GA down to 4th place. ---Marcia Constance won three singles matches in the 75's with the loss of only eight games. Judy Levering matched that feat in the 65's.---Tom Foster and Jack Sterling showed their resilience by winning two three-setters in the 65 doubles.

---Brenda Carter, Susie Peiffer, Ann Hunt and Cindy Babb never lost a set, much less a match, in their blitz of the 55 field.

Thanks go to many people for the success of the South Carolina team.SCTA was generous in their help with the players' expenses. Ann Sweeny of Columbia arranged for distinctive T-shirts for all the participants.Scottie Rabb of the SCTA office was the team photographer and enthusiastic supporter of all the SC players. Burton Case of Columbia was helpful with many details including SC's own private courtside refreshments and keeping up with the intricate scoring system. Ron Charron, SCTA Executive Vice President from Mt. Pleasant, provided much-appreciated moral support.

Columbia's Carol Fowles was recognized at the players' barbecue for having served as referee for 18 years, as was Roberta Case for her years of leadership.

Congratulations to everyone involved with Team South Carolina. Well done!
