Wheelchair Tennis at Hilton Head

July 17, 2006 08:56 PM

USTA members who play wheelchair tennis, and those who like to watch wheelchair tennis action, will be pleased to hear that wheelchair tennis events in the Palmetto State are growing more prestigious. With a $2500 increase in prize money, the ROHO/PTR $15,000 Wheelchair Tennis Championships have become the ROHO/PTR $17,500 Wheelchair Tennis Championships. The tournament will be played at the Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island. Play begins on Wednesday September 20 and continues through Sunday the 24th. This event draws some of the top wheelchair players in the world, and is part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour. The championship has men’s, women’s, quad and junior divisions.

Wheelchair Tennis

Wheelchair tennis is likely to become a popular spectator sport. PTR recently helped fund an SC ETV special on wheelchair athletes in tennis, called “Spokes and Strings,” which aired twice in June. SC has some superb wheelchair tennis players and their skills were dynamically filmed in this special half-hour presentation. All interested spectators are encouraged to visit the Shipyard Racquet Club for this fast-paced action event.

In other wheelchair tennis related news; PTR will conduct an Instructing Wheelchair Tennis Workshop with Advanced Wheelchair Skills & Drills from 9am-2pm on Sunday, September 24. Chairs will be provided for able-bodied coaches to use during the workshop. The workshop fee is $50.
