2007 All Star Camp

February 7, 2007 04:35 PM

Despite a cold morning with a biting wind, the 2007 Dennis Van Der Meer All Star Camp was a great success. The top junior players from across the state gathered to train and play at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island. The players were given a variety of training forums including a speech by Bill Ozaki, on the court lessons from some of the state's top teaching pros, and a presentation from Dr. Young, a world famous sports psychologist.

The morning started off with breakfast and an informative speech by Bill Ozaki, USTA Southern Section's Director of Player Development. Bill gave the players tips on how to help your ranking, the best ways to choose tournaments to play in, and many other great ideas. The players then warmed up with dynamic stretching, which helps the players stretch more effectively by stretching as they move, rather than simply standing around. The movement was welcome as the morning was quite cool, however the players quickly warmed up and proceeded to the courts. The players spent the morning rotating between teaching pros who drilled the students in numerous skills including serve location, power approach shots, and doubles strategy. After lunch, and a great seminar on mental toughness presented by Dr. Bryce Young, the players jumped back onto the court for match play. Competition was tough, but the skill of all the players helped them learn how to win in tough matches. After match play ended the players enjoyed dinner served hot off the grill and then retired for the night. Sunday morning dawned with more drills on the court, a final speech by Chuck Kriese Clemson University's Men's Tennis Coach, and then the players headed home, tired but filled with new knowledge and confidence.

We would like to extend our thanks to Dr Bryce Young and Coach Chuck Kriese for their contributions to the All Star Camp. We would also like to thank K3 Tennis, the official ball sponsor of the 2007 All Star Camp.
