First Rising Stars Event Held in Florence

March 20, 2007 04:27 PM

The Florence Tennis Association held the first ever Rising Stars at Timrod Park junior tennis tournament Saturday, March 17th. Forty-one junior tennis players from Florence, Hartsville, Timmonsville, Murrells Inlet, Columbia, Darlington, and Myrtle Beach braved the cool temperatures and chilling winds to play in the one day event. When the round robin play completed champions were crowned in 11 divisions. The event, a new tournament format being piloted in South Carolina, is one of the first of its kind in the state. The purpose of the Rising Star Series is to provide beginning tennis players, aged 18 and under, an opportunity to compete against players of the same level while learning what it is like to compete in a United States Tennis Association sanctioned event. Competitors in the Rising Star Series cannot have a high state ranking and cannot be seasoned tournament players. The emphasis is on the kids learning what tournament play is like and having fun.
