BullFrog USTA Southern Section Designated Results

May 3, 2007 01:52 PM

South Carolina players had an incredible showing at the Bullfrog Southern Sectionals. Our junior players won over half of the divisions! The weather was great for the weekend and the host sites couldn't have been better. This is the first year that the Bullfrog's have been split between age divisions, but the tournament directors, Justyn Schelver and Lucy Garvin, pulled it off without a hitch. South Carolina players won the most divisions, with a total of five out of eight championships going to the home-state players. Georgia wrapped up the remaining victories, with their #1 seed denying two of our players in the semi-finals and finals, meaning our juniors made it to six of eight finals, an impressive showing. Below are all of our champions, and our semi-finalist and finalist. Congratulations to them all, it was a great showing.

Girls’ 16s Winner – Shelby Rogers, Mt. Pleasant, SC
Girls’ 18s Winner – Laurianne Henry, Anderson, SC
Boy’s 14s Winner – Christopher Cox, Myrtle Beach, SC
Boy’s 12s Winner – Brent Lett, Columbia, SC
Girls’s 12s Winner – Hayley Carter, Hilton Head Island, SC

Reaching the semi-finals: Cal Hilsman (B16s) Spartanburg, SC
Reaching the finals: Bobby Browning (B16s), Florence, SC (Both of these players lost to the #1 seed, Nathan Pasha)

The tournament had several unique aspects about it. It was split between two sites, as mentioned earlier, which helped matches proceed more smoothly. The referees (Gary Link at Clemson and Sandra Morrissette at Hilton Head) did a great job, adding on to their normal duties by helping the tournament officials mentor several provisional officials. The provisional officials had experience, but are still learning the many details and nuances involved in being a good official. The provisional officials are learning through a new mentoring program that the USTA has set up to help new officials learn the ropes.
One of the officials who was working the tournament desk had a very unique, and potentially scary story, which fortunately had a happy ending. As the official was working the tournament desk at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center when she said she received "the most unusual call I have ever gotten while at a tournament desk." A nearly three foot long snake was on one of the courts and was looking to crawl into a player's tennis bag. The girls on the court were oblivious to the snake's presence. Fortunately Mario, the facility maintenance manager was able to corral the snake and move it to a more suitable area before the girls on the court figured out the source of the excitement (see pictures below). Such professionalism required when working tournaments, and fortunately the site also had some professionals to call on when the situation was out of the realm of a tennis official's experience. We want to thank Mario for his bravery and skill, which is a great demonstration of the dedication that the facilities’ staffs bring to tournaments.
We also want to thank Dennis and Pat Van Der Meer for letting us use the Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Hilton Head, and to Clemson and Furman for letting us use their sites. Without such great supporters as the Van Der Meer’s (They allowed the use of 21 of their courts at two facilities!) we couldn't have the same wonderful tennis events and great tennis players as we currently have.
