GAME ON…36’/60’ Tennis Sized Just for Children

May 25, 2007 01:54 PM

The Richland County Recreation Commission hosted a new children’s tennis program called Game On…36’/60’ on Saturday, May 12 at the Richland County Tennis Center and introduced 52 children, ages 5-8, to the fun and excitement of tennis. Game On 36’/60’ has adapted the basic rules to make the game easier and more fun for children. The smaller courts and foam and transitional balls used slow down the game so that the children can learn tennis basics at their speed. This type of program has been used in Europe with great success and has just caught on in the United States. More and more tennis programs are incorporating it into their children’s tennis programs.
The program was coordinated by Richland County Recreation Commission’s Director of Tennis Programs, Bernie McGuire, USPTA/PTR, Cliff Toms, assistant director of tennis programs, USPTA, PTR and Bob Crabb, assistant professional, USPTA. Other tennis professionals that attended the event were Liz McDonald, USPTA; Carmen Caver, USPTA, PTR; VJ Reddy, USPTA; Graham Cox from USTA, South Carolina; Tony Galbraith of Lancaster; Chris Harvey and Vivian Brewer also assisted.
Richland County Recreation Commission plans to continue Game On…36’/60’ at Richland County Tennis Center, Caughman Road Tennis Center and the Denny Terrace Community Center.
