Greenwood, SC, August, 2007 – Greenwood Area Tennis Association recently completed its first season of Kids Team Tennis. The area kicked the program off on June 30, 2007 with a pre-season event to market the program and give the parents and children a look at what the program was all about. Graham Cox, Director of Community Development for USTA South Carolina and Todd Norton, Tennis Service Representative for USTA Southern, joined a few of the volunteers from the Greenwood Area Tennis Association at the Kick Off Event to present the program and show the modified equipment used for the 10 and under beginner group. The two weeks following the kick off were designated for registration. The first program resulted in forty seven children ages 3 to 10 playing each week. The children were split up into eight different teams and Greenwood Area Tennis Association put on a “match day” at varying locations each week. Every child that attended the “match day” was given the opportunity to play. The season ended on August 18 with a Post Season Cook Out where each participant received a Participation Award for sharing in the program’s success. Leigh Martin, Interim Kids Team Tennis Coordinator as well as a parent to two of the children is very excited about the success of the program thus far. “The kids seemed to really enjoy it.” Many of the parents have already requested information about future seasons. As a result, Greenwood Area Tennis Association already has plans for the next season to start this fall.
