Spencer Brown, of Spartanburg, won the final of the "Little Mo" Junior National Tennis Championships, held Monday in Austin, Texas. Brown, the No. 2 seed, upset the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Noah Schachter of Stillcome, Wa., 7-6, 3-6, 10-8.
Brown blazed through the tournament draw, winning his two opening matches 6-0, 6-0. He won his semifinal 6-1, 6-2.
Brown competed against 16 juniors from across the country in the tournament, which was held at the Austin Tennis Academy. He earned an invitation to this prestigious tournament after winning the "Little Mo" East Regional Championship. The "Little Mo" is named after Maureen Connolly Brinker, the first woman to win tennis' Grand Slam in 1953. Andy Roddick, who captured the tournament's title in 1992, is among the event's most notable past winners.
Brown, an 8-year-old student at Pine Street Elementary School, is the state's No. 1 ranked player in the 10-and-under division. He has won a string of regional and state tournaments over the past year, including the recent Southern Clay Court Championships. He plays out of the Country Club of Spartanburg and is coached by Cornelius Jordan. Brown’s parents, Steve and Sherri Brown, also are tennis players, although Steve says Spencer can now beat them.
