Richland County Kick Starts Quick Start

February 13, 2008 04:52 PM

The Richland County Recreation Commission with Hunter Strasburger, PTR and VJ Reddy, USPTA, kicked off the first of a series of Quick Start Tennis programs for 2008 at two parks on January 26. Trenholm Park and Denny Terrace had 10 and 18 little students respectively. The Quick Start programs are designed to get kids from 5-9 years of age taking their first steps to learning and competing in tennis. The one-hour clinics included dynamic warm up, basic forehand technique, shadow strokes, drilling and rallying. Wilson donated prizes for games and trivia played by the juniors. Snacks were followed by an exhibition of good form by advanced players to show the children what practice could accomplish. Because Denny Terrace has only one regulation tennis court, the Quick Start program was a perfect fit. It is possible to set up six 36 foot courts and transform this one court facility into a tennis center capable of hosting tournaments and team competition. Richland County Recreation Commission’s goals are to expose all 13 of the parks to this great vehicle for younger ages to have fun and fundamental tennis in areas with reduced numbers of regulation court.
