Columbia Area Player Wins Both Titles at Girls' 12 National Spring Championships

April 16, 2008 02:15 PM
Hayley Carter of Columbia has won both the singles and doubles titles at the USTA Girls' 12 National Spring Championships hosted by the City of Delray Beach. Hayley, the USTA SC Junior Girl Player of the Year, defeated four of the top 15 seeds, including the #1 seed, in her successful quest for the singles title. Hayley and her partner, Brooke Austin defeated three of the top ten seeds in their journey to the doubles championship.
In a test of a partnership and friendship Hayley faced off against Brooke in the quarterfinals of the singles championship and Hayley defeated her partner in three sets. Hayley CarterHayley spoke to USTA SC in a phone interview saying, “It’s tough to play your partner and then have to play doubles with her after beating her. It was ok though because Brooke was very nice about it.”
Hayley studies at the Smith Stearns Academy on Hilton Head Island under coach Billy Stearns. Hayley says her favorite part of being at the academy is “learning something new every day and just hitting in practice because there is less pressure.” Hayley is up at 5:00 during the week to get in an hour of practice before she heads off to school. Her dedication has really paid off with success after success and we look forward to following her as she rises through the rankings and age groups.
