The Ellen Hines Smith Girls' Home of Spartanburg recently received a Kids at Risk grant from the South Carolina Tennis Patrons Foundation. Organized by Mary Ann Cleland of the Junior League of Spartanburg, the $1,200 grant will be used to introduce tennis and promote health and fitness to the girls.

Cleland, a USTA member and avid player, hopes this grant will give these girls an opportunity to develop their tennis skills and their interest in the game. In addition to these tennis clinics the grant helped provide QuickStart Tennis equipment and members of the Ellen Hines Smith Girls' Home will have opportunity to practice at home.

The tennis clinics are held at the Spartanburg Athletic Club where director Stephan Broom energized and entertained approximately 20 girls ranging between 11 and 19 years old. The Junior League has been involved with the Girls Home since its inception in 1974 and helped in establishing the Home. The SC Tennis Patrons Foundation is proud to support this project.
