SC Team Once Again Dominates at Southern Senior Cup

June 9, 2009 12:54 PM

The 2009 Southern Senior Cup Team Championships, also known as the “crown jewel” of Southern age division tennis, provided world class tennis and team camaraderie both on and off the courts of the Huntsville Tennis Center in Huntsville, AL.

The event, in its first year in Huntsville, featured the top 260 players in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee in Men’s and Women’s 35, 45, 55, 65 and 75 age divisions.

Once again South Carolina’s top adult players conquered the Southern Section at the Southern Senior Cup.  The SC team swept the event last year, winning the Gil Stacey Cup (most individual wins) and Mildred Southern Cup (most age groups won) along with both the overall men’s and women’s divisions.  This year’s team returned many of last year’s stars and came within just a few games of repeating the sweep.  The team again won the Gil Stacey Cup, Mildred Southern Cup, and the overall women’s title, but just missed winning the men’s title.

The SC team, as always, looked stylish in their lightweight windbreaker vests, provided by USTA SC.  Betsy McColl, longtime Senior Cup player, was very excited about the vests.  “The other states are always jealous of SC because we have more support from our association than they do,” she said, “not to mention that we always seem to be in the running for the Cup.”

This year's SC team included seven players who participated in the first Senior Cup competition at Hilton Head 23 years ago!  They are Brenda Carter, Betty Warthen, Betsy McColl, Emile Rasheed, Ben and Dewey Varn and Bernie McGuire (who was unfortunately sidelined due to injury).   The inaugural Senior Cup in 1986 included only four states (SC, NC, GA and TN) and three age groups (35, 40 and 45).  It was expanded the next year to include all of the states in the Southern Section, and eventually the age groups became 35, 45, 55, 65 and 75.

Tournament Referee Carol Fowles of Columbia, SC, has been with the event for 21 of the 23 years and is a permanent fixture to the Southern Senior Cup. Dene Owen, Mike Mathis, Terri Wiley and Holly Goddard were on hand as Southern tournament staff to keep the event running smoothly.

Congratulations to all of the players who were selected to represent their state at this prestigious event.
