USTA SC Jr. Team Tennis Teams Shine at Sectionals

August 25, 2009 01:57 PM

USTA SC Jr. Team Tennis teams continued their climb towards becoming the best in the nation at the Jr. Team Tennis Sectional Championships which were held in Mobile, AL August 21-23. The play was fantastic, and while some teams faltered, SC teams rose to the challenge and placed in either first or second in three of the six divisions.

For two of the South Carolina teams, Tennessee played the spoiler. Coach Jim Elliget’s team, The Lowcountry Crushers, played a fantastic match against the Tennessee squad, with players matching each other point for point as they tried to claim the 18s Intermediate crown. It finally came down to a decisive few games, and after a long day the Crushers just didn't have quite enough left in the tank and Tennessee claimed the title.

Not satisfied with crushing the hopes of one SC team, Tennessee faced off against Aiken's own The Future Federers II, Coach John Tiffany, to determine the 12s Intermediate champion. Somehow the matches were even closer this time, and when the two teams came off the court they realized they were completely tied in games won. The championship would now be decided by a 10-point tiebreak played by the two team's mixed doubles players. The Future Federers' players matched Tennessee's pair point for point as both teams ringed the court cheering wildly each time their players scored a point. Eventually someone had to get a break and, unfortunately for Aiken, the Tennessee team managed to hold two points in a row to claim the crown.

One SC team, however, was not going to be satisfied until they won an invitation to the Jr. Team Tennis National Championships. After suffering disappointment in seeing his 18s Intermediate team fall in the finals, Coach Jim Elliget wasn't going to let his 14s Advanced team, The Lowcountry Gators, settle for anything less than total victory. The Gators dominated their division, taking the title by 25 games and giving their opponents no mercy.

USTA South Carolina, and especially Manager of Junior Programs Michelle Campanella, wish to extend thanks to all of the players, coaches and volunteers who help make Jr. Team Tennis so exciting.
