AATL Hosts New Player Clinic

February 9, 2010 08:53 PM

The Aiken Area Tennis Association hosted a Free Recruitment Clinic on Saturday, February 6th at the O’Dell Weeks Tennis Center.  Twenty-two players braved the damp & cold morning to attend, and local Pros Mark Calvert and Roberto Garcia kept them moving for 2 hours straight. The USTA SC Western Area Director, Gayl Hoel, was present along with her husband, and AATL Website Coordinator David Hoel, who both facilitated the event.

AATL’s promotion offered a 1 year USTA membership for people who have never been a USTA member and their Local League registration fee was also paid.   AATL registered 42 new USTA members, and 47 new league players.  The difference between the numbers is based on 5 existing USTA members who never played in USTA league.  All 47 of the new players were either 2.5 or 3.0 NTRP.

What does this mean to the Aiken Area Tennis League?
1.  Able to field a 3.0 Senior Men's division made up of 3 teams after registering 14 new players.
2.  Able to field a 2.5 Adult Male team at State championships based on signing up 5 new 2.5 Adult Male (<50 yrs of age) players.
3.  Able to have a 2.5 Adult Women's division composed of 3 teams after signing up 28 new players.

AATL funded their expenses to provide this promotion from proceeds of hosting the FunFreeze tournament.  Additional contributions were provided by the Aiken Area Tennis Association.

This recruitment event grew the AATL by nearly 10%.  That’s amazing!  Our thanks to Eddie Estochen, Phil Meador, Robert Garcia, Dawn Calvert, David Hoel and Mark Calvert for their volunteer time and passion to introduce more players to the game.
