College of Charleston earns automatic bid to Tennis On Campus National Championships

Auburn, Ala. – The hosting Auburn Tigers claimed the USTA Southern Section Campus Championship crown on Sunday, Feb 28 on its own courts of Yarbrough Tennis Center. The victory secures their place in Surprise, Ariz. for the National Championship tournament. Joining the Tigers with an automatic bid is finalist College of Charleston and third place University of Alabama.

Auburn started the championship bracket defeating Duke University, the defending national champion then went on to beat intrastate rival Alabama in semifinal action. The final match faced them against the College of Charleston, who defeated North Carolina State and North Carolina by a total of five points. Auburn brought the Cougars another close challenge but the Tigers prevailed, 21-20.

Alabama dropped North Carolina 27-17 to claim third place and the final automatic bid. Teams have a chance to earn one of two additional automatic bids when the second Southern Section championship event takes place March 13-14 in Knoxville, Tenn. The section received five total automatic bids from the national office for its championship event. Teams not receiving a bid can apply for consideration for lottery picks available.
