Special Olympics Tennis Championships

March 11, 2010 03:40 PM

The Professional Tennis Registry and Van der Meer hosted the Special Olympics Tennis Championships from March 8-10.  The event hosted over 75 athletes, and volunteers from Jacksonville State University and SC State University assisting.  Athletes competed in six different types of competition, singles, doubles, unified doubles, university doubles, short court doubles and individual skills competitions.  Unified, short court, and university doubles pair a Special Olympics athlete with a volunteer.  The individual skills competitions allowed athletes who were new to tennis, or unable to participate in standard tennis, to show off their abilities at serving, forehands and backhands.  The athletes enjoyed a carnival and a dance on Tuesday, and the players were honored at an awards ceremony on Wednesday.
