USTA President and CEO Lucy Garvin was pleasantly surprised during a ceremony when QuickStart courts installed at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C. were named in her honor. Garvin was joined by USTA Chief Diversity Officer Kevin Clayton and longtime tennis instructor Dennis Van Der Meer, of Hilton Head Island, SC. USTA Southern President Rex Maynard and approximately 40 other USTA Southern and USTA South Carolina volunteers attended.

SC luminaries included Paul Pittman (USTA SC President), Ron Charron (SC Tennis Patrons Foundation Chairman), Bud Spencer (USTA SC Past President), Dodie Hanchett, Helen Jeter (USTA SC Past President), Cindy Babb, Bob Garvin, Toni Young (local tennis professional and volunteer in charge of ball kids at the FCC), Rob Eppelsheimer (Director, Facilities and Tennis Development for Family Circle Tennis Center), John Sheffield (USTA SC Executive Director), Steve Zalinski (USTA Southern TSR), Brenda Carter, Susie Peiffer, Ken Edwards (Lowcountry Tennis Association President), Jack Barker, Diane Fishburne and Bob Moran (General Manager of the Family Circle Tennis Center).

“This was a total surprise to me,” said Garvin. “I’m so honored that this took place in my home state and at a world class tournament that I’ve loved for 30-plus years. It means so much to me. Absolutely wonderful! The Family Circle Cup is truly special and South Carolina is fortunate to have the Cup here in Charleston.”

Quickstart tennis is a new format for learning tennis, designed to bring children into the game utilizing smaller equipment, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring, all tailored to age and size. It is divided into two different levels – ages 8 and under and ages 10 and under.
