2010 Selection Criteria for the Palmetto Championships

The Palmetto Championships in Belton is the South Carolina junior qualifying tournament for the Southern Closed Championships.  Each player South Carolina endorses has to play Belton (unless he or she meets the ranking requirement for a waiver).  This years draws have been expanded to 64 players in the 14's, 16's & 18's singles age divisions.  The 10's singles draws will be limited to 32 players.  Qualifying rounds have been eliminated and all matches will count for ranking points.  Doubles are also offered in each age division.  For more information, click here.

Selection Criteria:
The top 32 (10’s) or 64 (12’s thru 18’s) in the South Carolina state standings as of May 26, 2010 who enter the Palmetto will be selected for the singles draws.  Players will be selected based on their standing for the age division they enter. 

Note: a player does not have to be in the top 32 or top 64 to be selected for the tournament; they need to be in the top 32 or top 64 who enter.

Players who do not have a state standing, or a low state standing will be considered if:
-They are in the top 100 in the south in the age division they wish to play.
-They are in the top 300 in the nation in the age division they wish to play.
-They have won a Palmetto singles titles within the past 3 years.

If fewer than 32 players enter the 10’s, all players will be selected.
If fewer than 64 players enter the 12’s thru 18’s, all players will be selected.

Alternates will be selected from those who entered the tournament but were not in the top 32 or 64 players who entered based on the order of their ranking as of May 26, 2010.  On site alternates will be welcome to replace any last minute withdrawals or players who do not show.

Tournament Format:

  1. Singles draws (12’s – 18’s) will be limited to 64 with a full feed-in consolation.
  2. Singles draws (10’s) will be limited to 32 with a full feed-in consolation.
  3. Singles draws (10’s) using a one-day Quick Start round robin on 60’ courts.  This will be considered an exhibition event.
  4. Singles draws (8’s) will be limited to 32 with a one-day Quick Start round robin format on 36’ courts.  This will be considered an exhibition event.
  5. Doubles draws (12’s -18’s) will be limited to 32 with no consolation. 
  6. Doubles draws (10’s) will be limited to 16 with no consolation.
  7. Doubles draws (8’s) will be limited to 16 with a first round consolation.
  8. Selection will be based on the SC standings list run on closest to the entry deadline date.  The top 64(age eligible) and top 32(age eligible) applicants who enter the tournament will be selected.
  9. Seeding will be based on the Southern Level 3 seeding criteria for singles and doubles.
  10. A player may play in only one (1) age division, and must play singles and doubles in the same age division.
  11.  Players must meet USTA South Carolina, USTA Southern, and USTA residency requirements.
  12. USTA South Carolina requires that all players must have a copy of a Birth certificate or Green card on file at the USTA South Carolina office for proof of citizenship before play begins in the State Qualifier.
    1. A player may submit the information by fax (803) 753-9255 or by email to amick@sctennis.com or regular mail.  The list of competitors who have already submitted proof of citizenship will be posted on the Palmetto Championships tournament website.
  13. Players who participate in doubles only will not be considered for endorsement unless they meet the criteria outlined in the first paragraph.
  14. Only the Waiver Committee may grant a waiver from the Palmetto Championships. Except for injury or illness, all written waiver requests must be submitted by the entry/registration deadline to be considered.  A written statement must accompany a waiver request for injury or illness and signed by a licensed physician.
