Charleston, SC Ranked as One of the Top Tennis Destination in the World

May 11, 2010 03:33 PM

(Charleston, SC) – With its annual rankings, Tennis Resorts Online  (www.tennisresortsonline.com) named two Charleston area resorts as the top tennis resorts in the world.  Kiawah Island Golf Resort maintained its No. 1 status, which it held four of the last five years, while Wild Dunes Resort moved from No. 10 in the world in 2009 to No. 2 in 2010.  Both resorts are located in the Charleston South Carolina metro area.

Tennis Resorts Online has one of the most respected tennis destinations rankings in the world based on evaluations submitted by vacationers. “The best sources of information about a tennis resort are the players who go there on vacation,” says Roger Cox, founder and editor of Tennis Resorts Online. “But these aren’t ordinary players. They spend on average 100 days a year on court, which means that they have high expectations of the staff and programs.”

Tennis Resorts Online surveyed players to assess resorts in 17 categories. Categories included many aspects of the complete tennis resort experience, including quality of lodging, restaurants, children's programs and value.  For the complete list of 2010 Top Tennis destinations in the US, visit www.tennisresortsonline.com.

In addition to the two top-rated tennis resorts, Charleston is also home to the annual Family Circle Cup, one of twenty Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Premier Events, held in April at the Family Circle Tennis Center.  Over 90,000 fans from across America and around the globe attend this world class event boasting a roster of former champions including Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Jennifer Capriati, Venus & Serena Williams, Justine Henin and other superstars.  The Tennis Center, a public tennis facility, features a 10,200 seat stadium, Grand Lawn, 17 Har-Tru tennis courts lighted for night play, racquet club and full-service Pro Shop.

“Charleston is undoubtedly one of America’s premier vacation destinations.  When you consider that the Lowcountry is home to a pair of the top-ranked tennis resorts, a thriving year-round tennis community and a world class professional women’s tournament, there’s no better place for avid players to enjoy a getaway vacation immersed in the sport they love,” commented Bob Moran, General Manager, Family Circle Cup.
