Southern Captures 2014 Donoff Cup

2014 Donoff Cup champions

Led by veteran Donoff Cup players Steve Duffel and Hugh Thomson, USTA Southern ran away with the  2014 Keith Donoff Men’s Challenge Cup, defeating runner up and defending champion Texas by 6 points.

The key to the victory was Southern taking five of the six crucial doubles matches from Texas on day 2. Overall, Southern won an incredible 37 of 45 matches over the course of the event.

The Keith Donoff Men’s Challenge Cup was held in Wilmington, Del., on Sept. 12-14. The Donoff Cup brings together the top men's players in the 55s, 60s, and 65s from the USTA Southern, Texas, Midwest, and Middle States Sections in a team competition format.

Top players from seven states of the USTA Southern contributed to the victory.

Team Southern members:

55s: Ken Koelling (MS), Russell Buchi (TN), Mark Thompson (MS), Jon Buise (LA), Drew Meyers (LA) (Captain)

60s: Tom Smith (GA), Jim Hinson (SC), Roger Pearce (GA), Steve Benton (LA), Marty Pearson (MS)

65s: Les Buck (NC), Hugh Thomson (GA)( Recruiting Coordinator),  Norm Chryst (SC), Al Yearwood (TN), Steve Duffel (AR) (Captain Emeritus)

The 2015 Donoff Cup will be hosted by Midwest in Cincinnati, Ohio.
