Broadly, to become an official, you must attend one of the officials clinics, normally offered in the late winter and early spring throughout South Carolina. Before attending a clinic you will be required to take the Provisional officials exam which can be downloaded from After having attended a clinic you must officiate at least 5 days your first year to be elevated to a sectional level umpire; and each year thereafter you must attend an officials clinic plus officiate at least 5 days or more each year to maintain your status as a sectional umpire. In addition, you are required to have an eye exam every other year.
