2012 Certification Program

Dates have been set for SC clinics in 2012 during which training will be given for 2013 re-certification. Officials wishing to become re-certified for 2013 must attend the appropriate clinics. Officials certified 4 or more years can complete all their schools in one day. Officials with 1, 2 or 3 years experience may attend the Columbia Sunday USTA Basic clinic and may attend the Saturday afternoon Referee and/or ITA schools. [Note: schedule reversals if you go to Greenville, Florence, or Charleston].  Provisionals should attend only the Basic USTA School at each clinic (unless an individual exception is made).  [Basic USTA dates for each clinic are:  Columbia-Sun, 22 Jan; Florence-Sat 5 Feb; Greenville-Sat, 11 Feb; Charleston-Sat 25 Feb.]

Referees [except as noted below] and ITA officials must also attend the USTA Official’s clinic every year. If you have any questions about which clinic you must, can, or cannot attend, contact George Varn at GLVarn@gmail.com.

All 2012  tests [3] are now online and can be found at  http://www.usta.com/About-USTA/Officials/Officials_test_new/

This year all tests [open book] will be taken online and graded by computer. It is recommended you download the PDF version to work the test and then go back online to record and submit your answers. There is a caveat on the website that if you close the browser before pushing the "submit" button, you will lose you all your answers. Your score will be e-mailed back to you. Print out your score and bring it to class – it is your admission ticket. You must present your test score or you will not be permitted to attend the clinic and will have to attend another school. No exceptions. To get credit for each clinic, you must attend the entire class.

New [Provisional] Officials: For those who want to become an umpire for the first time, please click here to go to the 2012 USTA Provisional Official Exam.  This link contains all information, including the 2012 Friend at Court, as well as the online and hard-copy versions of the Provisional Exams.  Please complete the online version of the exam, and notify George Varn when you have completed the test.

Next, apply for a Background Check  by going to www.usta.com/backgroundcheck. Then apply, using link on right side of the USTA Officials Home Page, for addition to the  NUCULA database.

Your next step is to (1) sign-up for one of the USTA Basic Clinics (SC Clinic Dates can be found below); (2) take the USTA Exam [see instructions above] before your Clinic and bring your test Score to the Clinic [it is your admission ticket].  New officials cannot attend the Referee or ITA clinics without prior approval from SC District Chairman George Varn.

All National and Professional level officials are exempt from testing this year UNLESS you also hold an ITA certification or an additional certification at the USTA level or below. Then you must attend the USTA  Advanced school, plus appropriate afternoon school(s), and pass appropriate tests beforehand.

The following schools are scheduled.   Online registration at www.sctennis.com is required for all SC Clinics.  [DO NOT register on NUCULA and PLEASE DO NOT send E-mail applications directly to George Varn]

2011 Officials Mentoring Program

South Carolina Referee Mentoring Program
USTA SC also offers a new Referee Mentoring program similar to the Roving Officials. This program is aimed toward giving Provisional Referees the knowledge and confidence needed to execute a successful tournament. An official may be certified as a Provisional Referee by taking the appropriate USTA tests and attending the USTA Officials and USTA Referee schools. However, before a Provisional Umpire can be added to the list maintained by USTA-SC of those approved to referee USTA-SC sanctioned tournaments they must complete a referee mentoring program under the supervision of an SCOC-approved Referee Mentor. This program includes working a minimum of one complete tournament as a volunteer deputy referee under an experienced referee whose tournaments follow USTA & USTA-SC guidelines.
