Calvin Woods says his experience with tennis has changed his life completely. It’s no wonder, then, that he is entering another term as Central Area Director for USTA South Carolina. He is also presently chairman of the USTA/SC Multicultural Committee and a member of the state association’s Community Development Committee. He previously served as a member of USA School Tennis Committee.

Woods started playing tennis at age 23, and since then has been a USA League player and a volunteer for the DD&J Junior Tennis Program. He served as a site manager for the USA League Tennis Southern Sectional tournament last summer. He also has coached a JTL (Junior Tennis League of Columbia/Lexington) team.

In 2003, he received one of the USTA/SC’s Community Service Awards for his work as a volunteer. Woods also received the Leadership Award from the Greater Columbia Tennis Association, a community association promoting tennis activity at Greenview Park Tennis Center in Columbia, which he has served for many years.

Woods currently works for the South Carolina Public Service Commission as Postal Center Director in the Administration Department. He is a graduate of Dreher High School and attended South Carolina State University.

His wife, Evelyn, is a non-player but enjoys the game. Their son, Rory, played tennis during his high school years.
