Introduction

Spartanburg CTC

The Competition Training program is being completely re-vamped for 2007. The USTA’s Competition Training Centers (CTC's) began in 1988. The concept was to bring together the very best players to compete and train. Included in that program is making sure the coach's involved have all of the latest information in Sport Science and technical Coaching developments.
Low cost, high level training.
Designed as supplemental training for players ages 10 - 13. (We have added an addition by including players up to age 18.) This program is not designed to replace the players' existing coaching program but to provide additional knowledge and match opportunities in a fun team environment. CTC's offer a mixture of competition, match play, drills, fitness, strategy and skill development and sport science information.
USTA SC used to run CTC’s from Sept - December, but we are now trying to offer High Performance (HP)training all year long. We want to also offer HP training to our Coaches. The coaches on the Player Development Committee will have an opportunity to participate in many high level coach's training events offered by the USTA.

USTA SC offered it’s first CTC of 2007 on January 6. The 41 players who participated were filmed by High-Tech Tennis on court. They got to view a Video/DVD analysis of their strokes using DartFish technology. (http://high-techtennis.com) In the afternoon they had match play against some players from North Carolina.
9 pros participated in January’s CTC: From the Spartanburg Country Club: Wernher Hartzenberg, Brad Armfield, Stephen Broom, Cornelius Jordan (Chairman of Player Development), Carlos Lozano & Eric Martinez (Top Spin Club in Lexington), Joey Eskridge (I'ON Club in Mt. Pleasant, 2007 Junior Southern Cup Head Coach), Tyler Davis and Greg Harkins (Family Circle).

Players had a great time at the event. Some of the quotes included:

“Ted Quinn (Physical Trainer) was an inspiration." “
I really enjoyed the attitude and performance from Ted Quinn ....."
"It was such a great experience! This was awesome!”
"I had fun!”
“One player even worked so hard that he missed his tennis lesson the next day, and he never misses tennis. The event gave the players a good idea of the fitness required to play at higher levels.”
