Gayl Hoel is the West Area Director serving Aiken, Barnwell, Edgefield and surrounding counties. She serves on the SC Bylaws & Policies Committee and the Communications & Marketing Committees as well as the Southern Section Information Technology Committee.
She was formerly on the Board of Directors for the Aiken Area Tennis League and is a volunteer with the Central Savannah River Area Tennis League (CSRATA, in Augusta, GA includes Aiken County, SC). In 2005, when her daughter started playing tennis, Gayl discovered that the Aiken juniors were traveling to play in Augusta because there was not a youth program in Aiken. With local pro Arturo Costa, she founded the Aiken Junior Tennis League as a USTA Junior Team Tennis program. Gayl herself participates in USTA league tennis in Adult, Combo, Mixed and Senior divisions in both SC and GA and serves as a team captain most seasons.
Prior to taking up tennis 7 years ago, she was very involved with golf, holding several volunteer positions in the Executive Women’s Golf Association and as a junior golf coach. She has also coached youth soccer, middle school tennis and is a certified swim official. Gayl moved to Aiken, SC with her husband, David, and 3 children in the summer of 1997 from Alexandria, VA. She graduated from Gettysburg College and presently works for Savannah River Remediation at the Savannah River Site. What she lacks in tennis pedigree, she makes up with enthusiasm and organizational skills. She is often approached to help with tennis fundraisers and tournaments and enjoys interacting with tennis people at all levels of the game.
