The Challenger circuit is a series of sanctioned tournaments that count toward a regular state ranking. The goal of this program is to provide a bridge between the entry-level junior tennis players and top state-ranked junior players. The purpose of the Challenger Circuit is to provide opportunities for beginning junior players to gain tournament experience against equal level competition. This program is intended to act as a feeder system into regular SCTA Junior Tournaments.

Comments from the Challenger Circuit Committee: The committee is concerned about the lack of South Carolina players with Southern and National rankings. We [the committee] believe that the challenger circuit is the training ground for future players and champions.

CHALLENGER MASTERS TOURNAMENTS FOR 2003:

There will be two challenger Masters Tournaments in 2003. The first one will be held at Greenwood Country Club (SC State Closed Jr. Challenger Championships) from Aug. 2nd-Aug. 4th. The player must have played in at least one other Challenger prior to entering. The second challenger Masters tournament will be held at Topspin Racquet & Swim Club (Topspin Challenger Circuit Championships) from Oct. 31st – Nov. 2nd. To enter that tournament, the player must have played in at least two other Challengers prior to entering (excluding the August Challenger Masters at Greenwood).

CHALLENGER CIRCUIT RANKINGS:

Challenger Circuit rankings are being abolished. Instead, all decisions (for entry eligibility) will be based on SCTA “CURRENT STANDINGS”.

CHALLENGER TOURNAMENT WINNERS:

Following each tournament, Challenger Tournament Winners will be posted on the SCTA website (www.sctennis.com). If a player has won TWO challenger tournaments in the course of a year, then he/she is NOT eligible to play in any more challenger tournaments (with the exception of the two Challenger Masters Tournaments).

CHALLENGER RULES:

  • For Boys 10s and Girls 10s: To be eligible to play in a challenger tournament, he/she can not have a CURRENT STANDING in the top 15 as of the tournament entry deadline.
  • For Boys 12s-18s and Girls 12s-18s: To be eligible to play in a challenger tournament, he/she can not have a CURRENT STANDING in the top 25 as of the tournament entry deadline.
  • There is NO PLAYING UP. (The player must play in the youngest age division for which he/she is eligible.)
  • RULES FOR AGING UP: We encourage the players to enter a regular SCTA sanctioned tournament for their first tournament in a new age group before playing in a challenger tournament. After playing in a regular sanctioned tournament, he/she will have established a standing in the new age group. By establishing a standing in the new (higher) age group, his/her eligibility can then be determined according to the Challenger Rules.

THE FOLLOWING ARE RECOMMENDED FOR 2003 & WILL BE REQUIRED FOR 2004:

  • Every Challenger Tournament will offer both Singles and Doubles for all players.
  • Three Singles matches will be offered.
  • Match play in Singles will be 2 out of 3 sets with a ten-point tiebreaker used for the 3rd set if necessary
  • A two-minute coaching break will be allowed between the 2nd and 3rd set.
  • Doubles draws can be 8-game pro sets (at 7-all, a regular tie-breaker will be played)

The above rules have been established by the Challenger Circuit Committee in order to encourage play; we hope that you will agree with us, and follow our lead in our continuing efforts to improve and increase the productivity of the Challenger Circuit. (Our goal is to have a minimum of 30 Challenger Tournaments next year (with our “weakest” Challenger areas being the Upstate and the Myrtle Beach area).
