Super Seniors Have Warm, Wet, Cold, Sunny, Windy, Great Time at State Championships

ISLE OF PALMS SC – Pick a weather pattern and you pretty much had it during the five-day USTA South Carolina Super Senior League State Championships, but the last three days were sunny and dry and the tennis was torrid as the 60s, 70s and 75s squared off in hopes of advancing to the Southern Championships in December.

Wild Dunes Resort again was host site with matches spilling over to Family Circle Tennis Center , Daniel Island Club, Snee Farm and Live To Play. The 70s began Wednesday, then got rain Thursday that scattered players and schedules but didn’t put a crimp in the almost 600 players who turned out for the players’ party that night. The 70s went into pro-sets to finish Friday when 60s began play in the sunshine that turned to chillbumps and wind Saturday as the 75s joined in the competition.

Overall, Hilton Head Island teams were the top winners, capturing six team championships and finishing second in four. Low Country took three championships and one second place. Coastal Carolina , the newest local league, won two championships and had four second-place finishes. Lexington, Upper Piedmont, Columbia and Pee Dee each had one champion, while Grand Strand got three finalist spots, Upper Piedmont had two and Aiken one.  To view pictures of the winning teams, and to see lots of other candid shots, click here.

SC Super Senior Coordinator Bonnie Sue Duncan counted 116 teams in the draw, up from 112 last year. "Although the 60s men's 3.0 numbers were lower (teamwise), our 4.0 number of teams -- both men and women -- were up," she said, adding "and for the first time there are 4.5 men's and women's teams in the 60s and 3.5 and 4.0 70s team numbers were up. The competition was the best ever and SC will be well-represented at Sectionals."

In addition to the champions, six more South Carolina teams will be in the draws at Sectionals. Five will go as wild cards: 60s Men’s 3.0 and Women's 3.5, plus 70s Men’s 3.0 and 4.0 and Women's 4.0. Also competing will be the Hilton Head Island 60s Men’s 4.5, advancing straight to Sectionals.

The Southern Championships will be Dec. 3-5 on Hilton Head Island , with Van Der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club as host site. This will be the first time Sectionals will take place during the same calendar year as the SC State League season and championships. Earlier this year and in past years, Southern Sectionals have been played in the Spring following the local league season and state championships.
